Rollover Accident in Cedar Rapids Sends 3 to Hospital

On Monday, December 12, 2011, an unexpected accident took place in southeast Cedar Rapids when a skid loader came loose and caused a serious rollover accident in Cedar Rapids. Authorities indicated that the accident was caused when a loaded trailer detached from a pickup truck.

51-year-old Richard Raim, of Springville, was traveling northbound on East Post Road SE near Trailridge Road SE in a pickup truck owned by the city. The trailer was loaded with a skid steer loader, which came loose while traveling.

Police indicated that the skid loader collided with a van traveling southbound. 42-year-old Sarah Fopma, of Marion, was driving her minivan when the skid steer loader hit her vehicle. Upon impact, the van traveled down an embankment and rolled over on its side.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, they had to extricate all occupants inside the minivan and firefighters had to stabilize the van. The occupants included Fopma, an infant and an older child. All three were injured and taken to Mercy Medical Center for medical treatment.

The children were identified as Fopma’s children, Josephine Fopma, 15, and 2-month-old Julia Fopma. Although there is no further information about the injuries they sustained, we do know that they have all been treated and released from the hospital.

After an initial investigation in to the crash, police cited Raim for failure to use required tow equipment.

The Law Offices of Brady Preston Gronlund would like to extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in this wreck.
