Johnson & Johnson Recalls Millions of Rolaids – Iowa Drug Recall

We should be able to trust that reputable companies such as Johnson & Johnson are providing safe products that consumers in Iowa and the rest of the nation can ingest. When a company does not provide this type of quality and makes defective products, they should be held liable.

On December 9, 2010, McNeil Consumer Healthcare issued a recall affecting 13 million packages of Rolaids. This is part of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, which is the largest healthcare products manufacturer in the world. J&J received citations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at its manufacturing plant.

The drug recall came about as consumers in Iowa and the rest of the nation were complaining of a strange smell in the product, vomiting and injury to gums and teeth due to taking the Rolaids product. Traces of wood and metal contamination were found in the product, which caused dozens of consumer complaints and injuries.

Johnson & Johnson contracted with a third party manufacturing facility in the making of these Rolaids Soft Chews. The maker of the contaminated Rolaids was named as Best Sweet of Mooresville, NC. This third party manufacturer also makes other health care products in this facility.

The public is concerned about other defective products that could have been manufactured by Best Sweet, and officials are urging the FDA to conduct further investigations on the third party plant since they manufacturer other confectionary type health care products.

Unfortunately, it appears that this is not the first issue for J&J this year, as they have been to blame for other quality control issues in over-the-counter medicine. They have also had to close down a manufacturing plant in Fort Washington, PA due to manufacturing problems and product quality issues, and have been enduring a congressional investigation.
