Iowa Children May Have Unsafe Toys Under the Tree This Year
Despite claims by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of increased policing of toy safety, toy-related injuries are on the rise. Last year 186,000 children under the age of 15 were seen in emergency rooms across the country for toy related injuries. This is an increase from 2005. CPSC is offering a number of tips to help parents avoid buying unsafe children's products this Christmas, including
Only buy toys that are age appropriate for your child;
Always make sure your child wears a helmet while using any ride-on toys;
Avoid small toys for children under 3;
Always supervise your children closely; and
Avoid toys containing small magnets if your child is under the age of 3.
Additionally, other child safety groups have released lists of the worst toys. WATCH (World Against Toys Causing Harm) recently released its list of the 10 most dangerous toys for children in 2010. The list includes the following toys:
- Spy Gear SplitBlaster
- Supasplat Splat Blaster
- Buzz Magnets
- Kung Fu Panda Sword of Heroes
- Ballzillion Tug Boat Play Center
- My First Mini Cycle
- Pull Along Caterpillar
- Animal Valley Pony
- Big Bang Rocket
- Walkaroo Aluminum Stilts
A number of these toys are sold throughout Iowa, including at Toys R Us. Parents should use caution this holiday season to avoid buying dangerous toys for their children. If your child has been injured by a dangerous toy, you should contact an experienced product liability attorney to discuss your options.
