Grinnell Nurses Avoid Sanction, Further Education Required

The Iowa Board of Nursing has concluded that two nurses involved in the care of Ruth Louden at Grinnell nursing home Friendship Manor will not face licensing sanctions, although the Board did require both nurses to complete 15 hours of continuing education on assessment of medical conditions. Ms. Louden was a resident of Friendship Manor for 25 days in 2008, after which time she lost her leg to gangrene and, three months later, died at the age of 89. The federal government previously fined the nursing home $101,250 in connection with Ms. Louden's care.
